What you should know about Parvo and Leptospirosis
Parvo Viral Enteritis is a viral infection that affects the digestive tract of young dogs. It causes bloody, profuse diarrhoea and puppies often die of shock. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection, spread in the urine of mammals. Rodents and wildlife are the most common vectors (they have and shed the bacteria but are symptomless) involved in infection.
Vaccination – Both of these diseases are vaccinated for in routine vaccinations.
For puppies: Vaccination should begin from age 6-8 weeks and repeated every three weeks until 16-20 weeks. This helps to protect against Parvo and other puppy diseases.
Annual vaccinations: At the Tobago Animal Hospital, we recommend adult dogs be vaccinated just before the rainy season. This allows your dog to have active immunity against some of the types of leptospira bacteria.
Control Movement– Puppies not fully vaccinated, should be housed on an easy to clean surface and away from unrelated adult dogs. Movement control for puppies also includes handling puppies first, before adults. For both puppies and adult dogs, ensure housing keeps them away from runoff and owners should restrict their access to standing water.
Regular Cleaning– Both agents can be killed and therefore controlled by household bleach. A 1:10 and 1:30 bleach : water dilution can kill leptospira and parvovirus respectively. Please note, that stronger concentrations would not necessarily improve killing power but will harmful to you and your pets.
Rodent and Pest Control – The use of rodenticide is best left to experts. Pest elimination companies are able to assess you homes and identify the best locations for rodenticides. Additionally, they use traps that allow entry and prevent exit of rodents but more importantly, these traps keep your precious pets away from the poison. If you suspect you pet of ingesting rat poison, please contact your veterinarian urgently. Flies are an important vector in the spread of Parvo. Fly control includes prompt removal of stool, urine, and uneaten food. The latter also discourages rodents.
This rainy season, be pet smart. This begins with vaccinating your pets and practicing what is essentially good pet hygiene. If you have any questions about the risks to your pets during this rainy season please feel free to contact us and schedule an appointment.
